OLD OWEN BARN RENOVATED AS CREATIVE STUDIO

Rental venue offering space for projects by creative professionals

MONROE, SNOHOMISH COUNTY, WASHINGTON.   After extensive renovations and prop staging — inside and out — Old Owen Barn has opened as a unique creative studio for use by photographers, videographers, documentary producers, filmmakers, cinematographers, musicians, advertisers and workshops.

The project is the brainchild of Seattleite Tracy Peterson. When Peterson lost her management position because of pandemic downsizing, she reinvented her career-self by transforming the nearly 100-year-old milking barn on her family’s farm where she was raised.

“My Covid-layoff became an adventure,” Peterson said. “The rental space is taking off. Recently, a filmmaker used the barn for his entry into Seattle’s 48 Hour Film Project.”

She noted that her early research showed that barns mostly specialize in events, such as weddings. She envisioned Old Owen Barn allowing creative clients to tell their stories.

She added that photographers and musicians have told her, in addition to using the barn to produce their creative works, they enjoyed experiencing the surrounding acreage. That still-agricultural acreage has become a favorite backdrop for engagement photos, pet pictures and family portraits.

“Keeping a historic building useful provides a treasure for the community,” Peterson said. “I am also growing wildflowers, which I plan to harvest and then reseed on the land. It’s a balance of keeping the land agricultural, sharing with the artists to tell their stories and giving a nod to my parents who purchased the land in the 1960s.”

The barn is located in Monroe, Washington, near the Cascade foothills about 30 miles northeast of Seattle.
